My 15-year Story as a Singing Teacher:

“I can’t sing anymore,” my best friend said. I was heartbroken. He was my hero, and absolute savant. Brilliant songwriter, unbelievable audio engineer and powerful, inspiring singer. My friends would constantly ask me, “When’s he putting out another album?” I’d fight back the tears and say, “I don’t know.” His band only had a couple of albums under their belt but their sound was unique, fun, cutting, sarcastic, and so so danceable. They had a backbeat that just got the people moving, and Brooklyn crowds are notoriously hard to impress. He told me, “looks like I have polyps.” I had no idea what that was- but would soon find out that,it’s a singer’s worst medical nightmare. He didn’t smoke and barely drank, what the hell? What was going so wrong? Later that night, I went to a karaoke night with my friends at Union Hall in Park Slope, Brooklyn. This fat guy with long hair who looked like a banker gets up and absolutely murders “Shook Me All Night Long” with ease and grit. And I’m just standing there, “what the hell is this guy doing so effortlessly, while my best friend, the real musician, is losing his voice?” The entire world faded away for me, and all I wanted to do was be that guy on that stage, sounding like that, confident that I could sustain it for one, two, even three hours a night. So began a vocal journey into technique that would span fifteen years, two coasts, hundreds of venues and thousands of rock music fans. I sought out the very best voice teachers in the world, and soon found when it comes to rock n’ roll there’s a massive lack of teachers whose technique and pedagogy (or, philosophy of teaching) cover this. There’s not many singers under 60 years old who can make these sounds, and most of the guys over 60 are starting to lose their edge, or starting to push it with breath and losing their pitch. Or just losing that fire in the belly to crush as hard as possible for some other reason. And worst, the ones who still got it often don’t know what it is and have neither the desire nor the know-how to be able to teach someone like you or me. Either they don’t know, or they don’t want US to know! I went to voice teacher after voice teacher, and it seems they all were either trying to get me to sound like a Broadway guy, or they just didn’t know what they were talking about- they were trying to give me artsy visualizations that worked for them, and they sometimes worked for me, but often did not. I was desperate and frustrated, and started to actually believe that “some guys got it, and some guys don’t.” All the literature was about singing everything from musical theater to opera, maybe even some R & B- but none of the examples of ‘good technique’ they were showing sounded anything like my favorite singers- folks like Janis Joplin, Bon Scott, Freddie Mercury, Steven Tyler, Rob Halford, Stevie Nicks, Ann Wilson, Prince, Joan Jett, Elton John, Bon Jovi, Rod Stewart, Steve Perry, Axl Rose, Little Richard, Curt Cobain… And why were there careers all-too-often cut tragically short, while some others kept kickin’ it into their seventies?? Was it just dumb luck? Genetics? “Technique?” So began a 15-year journey that ultimately brought you here today, reading this right now. So, you don’t know me, but I know something about you… If you’re still reading this, you’re as passionate about great singing as I am. And you’ve probably already realized that cultivating good technique is just as important as being genuinely true to yourself creatively. They’re inseparable, like two sides of the same coin. Good technique isn’t going to make you sound like a cookie-cutter version of somebody else…

That would be technique, sure, but not Great technique. Great voice technique is going to assist you in following your creative instincts from the inception, to the studio recording, to the hearts and ears in the back of the house and beyond - it’s gonna sound like YOU, at your absolute peak- nothing more, nothing less.

So. How do we get there?

Great singing technique begins with a comfortable environment. I’m sure we’ve all seen movies where the athlete or the drummer or the troubled teen crosses paths with a coach who’s a hard-ass and it’s borderline abusive, but then this great coach draws this incredible performance out of their pupil! Hell, I’ve really enjoyed some of those movies! And yet… it doesn’t work that way with singing- not at all. That would be like a piano teacher getting frustrated with the student— and taking it out on the piano itself!

You Are The Instrument.

Yes it’s cliche, but it’s a cliche because it’s true. If you’re not feeling feel warm and welcome and even encouraged to make mistakes in service of becoming the most skilled, confident version of yourself, then I’m not doing my jobAnd I love doing my job.

The next step is cultivating ideal breath support. My hallmark secret? Breathe less! This may be the most wildly misunderstood aspect of voice training, based on the often kooky misconceptions some of my students have come in with. I don’t like to spend more time on breath support than is absolutely necessary- if I wanted to spend the whole time ‘breathing’, I’d go to a Yoga class! That being said, it’s a super important topic and we will cover it quickly and in depth so we can get to the meat and potatoes…. Click below

Bespoke, custom vocal exercises just for you.

Learning your instrument and understanding of technique as quickly as possible, we are going to use the advantages of certain phoneme combinations to begin to train your voice the way a person at CrossFit (constantly…) says that they get trained- that is to be a well-rounded vocal athelete- a vetruvian, renaissance singer- with the understanding that this will best facilitate your healthily and sustainably adding the types of vocal rasp and distortion you desire, and as befits my implicit promises of turning you into a Rock god.

These are exercises that you can take with you, not unlike Mantras- though not to be taken for a lifetime, just until the next session! Often in facilitating learning to do physiological vocal things that are habitually unfamiliar, we may work on a specific accent, or a celebrity or cartoon impersonation which facilitates a drastic change in vocal usage. An example would be for a singer who habitually keeps their larynx very high to learn to do an impression of Goofy, or Elvis.

A low-larynx lounge singer who wants to sing like Axl Rose may be asked to do an impression of Bugs Bunny, or Joe Pesci. Have a hard time letting go of all chest resonance to go full head-voice / falsetto? Give me your best Mickey Mouse impression! Or how about Michael Jackson in an interview… that’s pure head voice. Anyway, my toolkit is enormous, and my passion to help YOU be the absolute best rock singer you can possibly be is boundless. If you’ve read this far, I can tell you’re absolutely committed to becoming the very best rock singer you can possibly be. So what are you waiting for? Let’s meet one-on-one on Zoom so we can get to know each other, I can quickly assess your strengths we can build upon, and the next big thing to get goin’ to boost your vocal prowess and get you ridiculously confident about performing hard rock and everything else whether you’re in a pro tribute band like me, recording and performing your own music, fronting a band, or just being a humble Karaoke god like I was…

So click the link NOW and let’s get it going! You in?

Let’s kick it!
